ATTENTION – HELP!
As some of you know I am trying to get several Hobie 16 Trapseat teams (disAbled sailors) to the Lake Havasu Hobie Havamega regatta. This event is also the Hobie 16 Trapseat Nationals event.
Right Now I have Scott Bailey wanting to attend; Scott has a T10 spinal cord injury and double amputee. He is eager to go to this event. Scott is an exceptional sailor and is the featured sailor in the new Paralyzed Vets of America video. It would be great to have someone that is a local competing in this event and which I think would bring awareness of sailing locally.
I also have two others that want to attend and they may be able to but currently they having some medical complications so I am waiting to see if the doctor will clear them to attend.
The cost for me to travel to and from Havasu pulling a double stack trailer is about $900 in gas, hopefully a little less depending on the fuel rates at that time. For this event we will be gone about 13 days due to travel and the length of the event. Normally I would travel straight through to get to Lake Havasu but due to the nature of his disAbility I will have to take 3 days to get down there and 3 days to get back, he can not sit for a full day in a car, even then I would have to travel 433 miles a day. Motel rooms are estimated to cost between $50-$100/night so for 13 days it would cost between $650-$1300, after this food and other associated cost will accumulate. Plus the entry fee is $250.
What I am looking for is any individuals and companies that would like to Sponsor Scott and if approved the other disAbled sailors for this event. Any remaining funding will go back into the disAbled sailing program. I have applied for non-profit status and hope by Nov. to have that finalized, so yes some tax benefits may apply.
I know these are tough economic times and sailing does not seem to be important but it’s more that just sailing it’s giving Scott and possibly others an opportunity to do something that they may have never imagined was possible.
If you could help it would be so appreciated!
If any of you are planning on attending the Havamega Hobie Regatta for the other Hobie classes please let me know and please sign up ASAP.
